Sometimes it’s impossible to shake off that feeling of wanderlust…and perhaps you don’t even want to. So where should you go to for your next adventure? The beach, the mountains, a huge city—you’ve likely already been there and have done that. Go for something truly memorable, like a national park. Coincidentally, the National Park Service is turning 100 years old this August 25th. And in those 100 years, millions of people (307.2 million last year alone) have explored the different wonders of the U.S.
Currently, the national park system consists of a sizeable amount of land: over 84 million acres, consisting of 410 sites. These include, but aren’t limited to:
• 128 historical parks or sites
• 59 national parks
• 25 battlefields or military parks
• 81 national monuments
National parks and monuments fill the national park system. National parks are chosen for their beauty, unique geographical structures, and their ecosystems. National monuments, on the other hand, are chosen for their historical significance and/or geographical significance. Just think of all the places like Mount Rushmore, Old Faithful, The Statue of Liberty, Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park and others. And just ask yourself, how many of those places and things have you actually seen and experienced first hand? Exactly. Now is the time to explore!
Help celebrate the National Park Service’s centennial anniversary by exploring some of the world’s most intriguing places—and they just so happen to be right here on U.S. soil. It’s amazing what you can find in your own backyard.
