Drunken, loud, rude and generally trouble-making passengers can be a real hassle on a flight. They are a pain for the on board staff and for the other passengers. Apparently kind words and the fear of being arrested after the landing is not enough to deal with such air carrier passengers. Therefore, Hong Kong Airliens is now requiring all their flight crews to learn wing chun, a form of kung fu to properly handle troublesome passengers.
“Hong Kong Airlines said all staff had been invited to undergo training in wing chun — a form of kung fu used in close-range combat — but it was only compulsory for cabin crew,” read an AFP report quoted by USA Today.
According to the airline, each week forced the crews to deal with at least three unruly passengers. Their spokeswoman, Eva Chan, said the idea of adding martial arts training to their methods of preparing on flight staff was reached about two weeks ago, after a flight attendant actually used kung fu training to sort out an incident on flignt from Beijing to Hong Kong.
“One of the passengers was sick but he was probably drunk and felt unwell. The crew member attended to him and she realized her fitness was helping her, especially because the guy was quite heavy,” Chan explained.
Unfortunately, no actual kung fu fighting was used to help solve the incident, but being able to lift about one’s body weight came in handy. The form of kung fu to be taught to Hong Kong Airlines flight crews, wing chun, is a style well known for its fast moves. Members of the staff asked to take the wing chun lessons express content to being able to feel safer and able to respond to any incident.
And now, a song from us to Kong Fu… Sorry, Hong Kong Airlines!
