The most beautiful cycle trails in the world feature routes that bring together the best of the city and the country, and cross through some of the most remote terrain in the world. Most of these routes are designed for experienced cyclists, but can be completed in sections or as a complete route. While it is difficult to pin down the best trails, given the choice worldwide, some of the best range from Rajasthan in India to Amsterdam, Chile and Belgium and France.
1 – Udaipur City, Rajasthan
A great way to see rural India, this route connects to Udaipur City in Rajasthan, and covers forts, villages, palaces and the city. Reached via links from Delhi and Kota, Udaipur itself is a relatively small city, but still features a number of attractions, including the Udaipur City Palace, museums and the Badi Mahal garden.
The route is 90% paved, and begins in Karauli, before crossing through the Indian landscape via Kela Devi Park, the Jaipur backroads, the village of Nimaj, and on to Udaipur through varied terrain and lakes.
2 – Molesworth Road, Christchurch
A road for experienced cyclists, Molesworth in Christchurch, New Zealand, represents a 320km ride. The route is typically open from December 28th to April 1st each year, although a special access permit can be applied for outside of these dates. The route takes around 5-6 days, and is primarily isolated for long stretches. Landmarks along the way include Hanmer and its hot springs. The route starts from Kaiapoi, and winds down via the Inland Scenic Route, running past Rangiora, Amberley, the wineries at Waiari, and the Balmoral Reserve.
3 – Cycle Route 10, Amsterdam
Amsterdam is an ideal destination for cyclists, with multiple cycle lanes and the opportunity to easily cross from the Dutch city into the countryside. Cycle Route 10 is among the best of the official routes, and takes around four hours to complete. It covers 42m, and starts from the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam, moves through the city, and passes out into rural Amstelveen, before looping back into the city via the River Amstel. It’s recommended to be careful with bike lanes, scooters and pedestrians when navigating Amsterdam’s streets.
4 – Ruta Austral, Chile
Mostly unpaved, the Ruta Austral route in Chile covers 810 miles, and crosses from Puerto Montt in Chile down through Caleta Yungay to Villa O’Higgins and Northern Pantagonia. The route takes in Queulat and Cerro Satillo Parks, and is partly crossed by ferryboats. Cyclists can enjoy native forests, hot springs, and a number of mountain vistas and rivers. Villages are typically spaced every 500km on the route, so make sure you have enough supplies.
5 – Route du Comte Jean, Belgium and France
This route crosses from Belgium and Bruges into Northern France via the coast. It covers about 137 miles, and makes use of Belgium’s extensive cycle paths and routes on country roads. The ride takes in multiple towns and villages along the coast, and can also be structured to see Antwerp and wine vineyards.
