If you’re looking for a spot on the map that has been notoriously romantic throughout history, then you could do worse than letting your finger fall on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus (known as the Island of Amore). For starters, it was thought to be the birthplace of Aphrodite. Later, its inhabitants were said to have built the ships that took the Greeks to Troy in search of their lost beauty. And Antony supposedly gifted the gorgeous isle to Cleopatra.
The stories go on and on. So why haven’t you taken the time to visit this small island, purported home of love? Chances are that you simply aren’t aware of all that this crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East has to offer. Here are just a few reasons to plan your next romantic vacay on the island of Cyprus.
Climate
If you think that your travel dates are limited by the duration of summer weather, think again. The summer season of this sub-tropical island lasts an astonishing eight months, starting in April and going through November, with average daily temperatures climbing to a comfortable 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) and dropping only about 15-20 degrees at night. Even during the “winter”, the temperatures don’t drop much, although you may experience some rain. So your options for travel times are greater than most locales.
People
There is an interesting cultural mix on this small island, mainly because of a Turkish invasion a few decades ago. Of course, the island is split between Turks and Greek Cypriots (with a fair number of UN peacekeepers thrown into the mix), but the people of the island are, on the whole, friendly and accommodating, embracing both an old-world charm and a modern sensibility that suits most visitors just fine. In addition, they espouse both a love of family and of their home, so that many people who visit this island can’t help but wanting to stay (Richard the Lionheart reportedly fell in love and spent a year on the island during the Crusades).
Attractions
There are plenty of historical sites to visit and tons of old buildings to ogle and photograph, but if you’re looking for a little more action you might be interested to know that despite its small size, the island supports soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball, and cricket. Not romantic enough for you? You can also check out local art, music, and cinema.
Food
If you enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, you’ll definitely appreciate the food you find in Cyprus. Seafood is abundant, as are fresh fruits and vegetables (apples, grapes, and oranges, as well as cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, amongst other produce). They are famous for their halloumi cheese and they also routinely serve grilled lamb and pork with a variety of regional spices. And don’t hesitate to try their amazing desserts, including candies like soutzoukos and Turkish delight, along with some local wine (some of which is said to be the oldest continuously produced in the world).
Lodgings
Whether you’re staying at the gorgeous Cyprus Villas or camping out on a beach, you’re bound to find an amazing place to rest your head when you visit the island of Cyprus. Thanks to beautiful Mediterranean architecture, you can take in the view from a stylish balcony or retire to open-air courtyards or patios to enjoy the breezes, sip some wine, and steal a few kisses from your honey.
