The US National Tourism Week starts on May 7 and will end on May 15 (not your traditional 7-day week) and Virginia is the first to start celebrating. They have kicked off the national travel celebration with a revamped and improved vacation website for the Commonwealth – Virginia.org. The new site version makes it easier for travelers to plan a Virginia vacation through its added new technology and social media connectivity.
The new Virginia.org vacation planning website features interactive mapping, deals and travel packages, and a vacation recommendation engine for those who haven’t quite decided what they want to do on their holiday. The site also features multiple social media sharing tools, connecting it with Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, making it easy for travelers to share their top vacation choices and photos of the places they have seen with friends and family.
“We’re excited to share these new Web site tools that make vacation planning even easier just as we head into the summer travel season,” said Alisa Bailey, president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “Virginia has been a national leader in online marketing for more than a decade. As more and more people are using social media, our latest Web site features will connect Virginia with millions of potential visitors looking to plan and share their vacation experiences online.”
Under the “Virginia is for Lovers” tagline, the site promotes destinations and experiences that make Virginia vacations unique, targeting travelers that want to travel with their loved ones.
In 1995 Virginia was the first US state to launch a statewide tourism website. Virginia.org now welcomes more than six million visitors each year and is one of the top state tourism sites in the country. The Virginia tourism industry generates almost 18 billion US dollars in revenue. It also employs over 204,000 people and contributes 1.24 billion US dollars in state and local taxes.
