Sarawak (or the Malaysian section of Borneo) is home to some of the most beautiful sights and the best Malaysia hotels in the country. Borneo is still quite wild and has keep an aura of ancient, tribal, jungle life that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. Despite the savage cutting of the Borneo jungle and the modernization of the towns and villages, Sarawak still holds a fantastic hand over the imagination of thousands of tourists. 5. Kuching City
Kuching is the biggest city on Malaysia Borneo and has survived the Second World War better than any other cities in Sarawak. Although it’s a major commercial centre, Kuching is still a relaxed but sophisticated city that mixes age-old river ferries with modern skyscrapers.Happily, the downtown core is isolated by the river, so it’s hard to get lost in the sprawl. Kuching has a long history of inclusivity and different cultures and religions have cohabited in relative harmony for hundreds of years. 4. Damai Beach
The beaches of Borneo don’t have the reputation of, let’s say, Bali or Fiji, but there are still some good ones to see. Damai is probably the most popular of them. It’s a 35-minute drive away from the bustle of Kuching and the jungle backdrop will make you feel like you’re on a deserted island. It’s also a paradise for birdwatchers, as a variety of jungle and marine birds make their home there.
3. Santubong Fishing Village
Santubong is a tiny fishing village near Kuching that’s well worth visiting if you like history and archaeology. Scientists have discovered many ancient Hindu and Buddhist rock carvings in the river delta, which might illuminate parts of the ancient history of this region of the world.
You can also see traditional longhouses and handicrafts, and you might even get to bring back some fresh fish, if you’re lucky!
2. Miri City
A secondary city in Sarawak, Miri is still becoming one of the top tourist destinations in the region. Its proximity to strict Muslim Brunei makes it a top shopping and partying destination. Miri is also very close to a lot of the best natural spots in Sarawak, and so a natural destination for hikers, divers and wildlife lovers.
1. Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
This wildlife preserve in the Kuching area is open to the public, but don’t expect domesticated animals: this place is a rehabilitation centre for wounded animals so they can be sent back in the wild. This park rehabilitates orangutans and it’s probably one of the best places in the world to observe them in their element. Tours are arranged around the habits of the animals and the park rangers are really careful not to disturb them. This is the experience of a lifetime!
