Given its rich history and cultural experiences, many don’t think of love and romance when they think of Amsterdam. But if you want a magical experience never to be forgotten, you and your partner cannot go wrong in this city that offers everything from museums to canal tours, to a quiet afternoon in a park, to a throbbing nightlife of clubs and entertainment, and to full embracement of all things love and romance.
Here’s a quick guide to the sights that will make your romantic getaway one that will be unforgettable, no matter what you fancy.
The History and the Culture
If you and your partner are history buffs, Amsterdam will not disappoint. Here are just 5 historical sites:
The Royal Palace. Built in 1648, this structure ultimately became Amsterdam’s City Hall but is no more. Check hours when it is open to the public, and there are also guided tours.
Anne Frank’s House. There is a tour featuring World War II in Amsterdam, ending at this famous house that is now a museum. The young teen’s original diary is on display.
The Rembrandt House. This Dutch painter’s home gives a good overview of life during the artist’s time.
Amstelkring Museum. When Catholics were not allowed to practice their religion, this 17th century hidden chapel was built by the home’s owner. It’s a cool spot to see.
Museum Van Loon. The Van Loon family bought this 17th century house in the 19th century. It is now a museum that focuses on the history of Amsterdam. Visitors can wander all about the home and outdoor garden.
Amsterdam on a Bike
At last count, there were over 800,000 bikes in Amsterdam – a larger number than the population. If you and your love are physically fit, this is the way to really see Amsterdam (other than walking, of course). It’s bike-friendly because the landscape is so flat. Explore the Jordaan district or bike over to Vondelpark for a romantic picnic, a walk through its rose garden, or an event in its open-air theater. Sex was once allowed but is now illegal, and you will smell the scent of marijuana wafting through the air.
Your bikes will also take you to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel – a 12th century village with a lot of history.
The Arts – Museums
Museumplein is the district to visit if you and your partner are into traditional art – the Rijksmusem, the Van Gogh, the Stedelijk, and the Royal Concergebouw, to name a few. In between these, there are exhibitions, eateries, markets, and more.
For LGBTQ couples, there is also a Pink History exhibit at the Rijksmuseum, showing the historical evolution of homosexuality and its acceptance in the city.
There are other museums that will be exciting and fun. Visit the Eye Film Museum and the Moco Museum of more modern art.
The Nightlife
The nightlife scene in Amsterdam is probably not equaled anywhere else in Europe. From the Hard Rock Café to the red light district, to the local bars and pubs on every street, you and your partner can experience anything.
But do not miss the Paradiso, a converted cathedral that has and still now hosts shows from iconic stars, bands, and orchestras. For those who are into ts dating, this venue offers drag shows and competitions on a regular basis too. Just a huge variety of entertainment!
The Canal Tours
Amsterdam is a city of canals. And there are tours of any type, day or night.
If you want a view of architecture, take a day tour. If you want something more romantic, go at night and enjoy the ambiance of cruising along while you cuddle.
What’s Not to Love?
As a romantic destination filled with whatever interests you and your partner may have, nothing beats Amsterdam. You can literally have it all in one amazing city.
