Cannes is world-famous for its late spring film festival, one of the most popular in the world, and matched only in notoriety by the similar festival in Venice. The second most prominent trait on a traveler’s list is that this is the most glamorous French Riviera resort to spend your summer holiday in. That’s exactly what you’ll get if you travel in spring and summer. In May, the city is abuzz with movie celebs, but that’s not news to this French destination. Cannes has been the favorite destination for famous people of all nationalities since the late 19th century. Riding the season high comes with pricy rates and suffocating crowds, but if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ve just hit jack pot.

When Else to Travel to Cannes?
If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Riviera without having your personal space invaded by hordes of other star-struck tourists, postpone your trip till autumn. You’ll get far better rates for your stay at one of the many Cannes hotels, and you’ll have your pick of hotel style and budget range without fearing you won’t find a free room. It’s not as cheap as a winter trip, but the temperatures are high until November, so a fun in the sun holiday is not out of the question. Alternatively, if you hurry, you can catch your break in early spring, but it will cost you slightly more.
Overall, September and October are the best months for a budget trip. It’s warm, it’s practically empty, as almost everyone is back to school or work, and reservations to the city’s fine dining venues will be easier to come by. If you’re lucky, you’ll still spot a celebrity or more if they’ve been filming all summer.
What to See?
You can start with the obvious: a relaxing walk down La Croisette, the city’s world famous promenade, where you can enjoy the sound and views of the Mediterranean waves crashing against the shore. Then, give the museums a try, starting with Musee de la Castre, built in the 11th century by monks. For some high-end shopping, make your way to Rue d’Antibes, or give one of the casinos a try.
If you’re the outdoorsy type, you won’t be disappointed, even if you find it easier to think black tie and high heels when you think of Cannes. Massif de l’Esterel is only twenty minutes away, and this mountain range formed from red-rock volcanoes is definitely worth exploring. If islands are more to your liking, Iles de Lerins, a short ferry ride away, is where you should head to. Other than the beaches and vibrant night life, these islands hold other treasures. Ile Ste-Marguerite is home to Fort de L’Ile, and who wouldn’t like to see where the real Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned?
