6 Communication Apps for International Travelers

When you travel to another country, keeping in touch matters. You might need to call family, check in with work, or reach local services.

Some apps work over internet and others require to call real phone numbers. Below are top applications you can use when travelling abroad.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is simple and many people already use it. You can send messages, make voice calls, and do video calls. It works both on mobile and web..

If most of your friends use WhatsApp, this app will let you stay in touch fast if you are abroad.

Skype

Skype is useful when you need to call real phone numbers or toll lines. You can buy credit to call landlines or mobile numbers abroad.

Many people still use Skype for business calls and meetings, and it works on phones and computers.

If you need to join work meetings, some companies use business apps.

Most teams at work use Microsoft Teams for meeting, file, and group chat; install it before flying and test your login before you leave.

Signal

Signal is for people who want strong privacy. Messages and calls are end‑to‑end encrypted. The app is free and simple to use.

So you can choose Signal when you want secure chats and do not want your messages stored on company servers.

Telegram

Telegram is good for big groups and for sharing large files. It keeps chats in the cloud so you can open them on many devices.

You can also see public channels related to travelling on Telegram.

Sometimes you need to grab files from your home computer while you’re away. You can use TeamViewer to access your computer remotely or have a friend send files to you.

Before you travel, visit the TeamViewer download page, install the app, and run a test session at home so you know how to connect when you are abroad.

FaceTime

FaceTime gives very good video and audio quality for Apple users. It is built into iPhones and Macs, so it is easy to start a call with family back home.

However FaceTime works best between Apple devices and may be limited in some countries.

Viber and Google Voice

Viber offers free messages and calls to other Viber users and low rates to call phones if you buy credit.

Google Voice can give you a local US number while you travel, which helps with SMS and voicemail. So use these when you need a stable number or to call people who do not use messaging apps.
